Everyone needs a friend, and in Northwest Arkansas, there are plenty of amazing furry friends up for adoption at one of our many local animal shelters.
While the traditional municipal and county shelters are full of wonderful animals deserving of a home, there are also several private shelters and non-traditional ways to adopt a pet in Northwest Arkansas. One of the most popular is Purr Catfe, a cafe that partners with several local shelters and rescue organizations to get cats out of the shelter and into the cage-free Catfe environment.
The cage-free aspect of the cafe makes a world of difference for the cats. Of her brilliant kitty cafe, owner Lauren Solomon says, “it’s a place where they are going to be happy and comfortable enough for a human to take them home.”
Throughout Northwest Arkansas, it is a law that animals living within city limits must be microchipped and vaccinated for rabies, so the animal shelters always make sure to meet these qualifications before adopting out any guests. If you adopt privately or take in a pet off the streets, it is super easy and affordable to get them up to code. Some of the great nonprofit animal charities in the area host low-cost events each month to help make sure that every pet in NWA is living their best life.
Spay Arkansas is one local organization that works tirelessly to improve the lives of animals all over NWA by providing low-cost spay and neuter services to low-income households, rescues, and shelters. Additionally, they provide low-cost vaccination and microchipping services to the community.
For those planning to adopt or the already proud dog owners, Northwest Arkansas’ beautiful parks aren’t just for people! Most area parks are happy to welcome canine guests on leashes as long as they are well behaved and picked up after. However, there are a few parks in the area made especially for dogs: Fayetteville’s IAMS Dog Park, Murphy Memorial Dog Park in Rogers, Bentonville’s Bark Park, and the Bark Park in Eureka Springs. Most of the parks also provide an area to wash off your dog, as well as supplies to clean up after your pet. The Rogers and Bentonville parks have additional areas to work on training and agility skills with your dog.
The Humane Society of the Ozarks hosts events to benefit animals all across Northwest Arkansas, like the Annual Dogwood Walk in May, in Fayetteville’s gorgeous Gulley Park. There is also the annual Dickson Street Pup Crawl, where participants can take their doggos on a tour through Fayetteville’s most fur-iendly bars. Proceeds from the event benefit Fayetteville Animal Services.
The Humane Society of the Ozarks also produced the perfect gift for animal lovers, an annual book called “Tails of Love,” which features pets and their owners from the NWA area, and all of the proceeds go to the HSO. Please consider adopting a furry friend into your life, or volunteering your time or money to help save those who do not have a voice for themselves.
